Life on the Farm

Amazona guildingii looking for delicious golden apples

What better way to learn about eco farming than living on a working farm.. in the Caribbean?! We decided to spend 6 months on Saint Vincent, the most fertile island of all the Caribbean!

In 2019 we were introduced to a lovely lady called Yvette Pereira who owns Amazona Nest, nestled in Congo Valley below Jennings Mountain, on the Windward side of the island.

Amazona Nest is a working organic farm with a beautiful, simple house on site available to rent. It’s a perfect getaway and the landscape is stunning, with a river running alongside the farm, surrounded by lush jungle. As you may have guessed from the name, Amazona nest is the perfect place to spot the Vincentian Parrot, the Amazona guildingii. Back in 2019 we were lucky enough to spot 4 individuals and we were happy enough with that! However, Yvette said it’s common for 30 birds to come down in the evening to feed on golden apple trees located on the farm!

We came up again in October 2021 and that is when we asked Yvette if we could stay here to learn more about farming, research the parrots and other flora and fauna and immerse ourselves further into the Vincy way of life! On the farm Yvette and her team grow cocoa, dasheen, pineapple, ornamental flowers, herbs & salads, citrus, papaya, bananas, plantain, cinnamon, nutmeg, avocado, and more! It’s a perfect place to be based while we are visiting the island. Yvette and her team are so passionate about the farm and it’s such a great feeling to be living here – it inspires us so much.

So this is our base now until we leave the island! We have already met some great people through Yvette and learnt about cocoa and cinnamon harvesting, trekked along the nearby river for 5 hours and discovered lots of mini waterfalls in the jungle, climbed La Soufriére. We are learning more and more every day and feel so inspired and creative here!

To be continued!…..
